ProSport launches financial planning service
25th January 2017 by Guy Horchover
Today we launch an exciting new partnership with Mercer Jelf to provide general insurance and financial planning services to our clients.
The decision was made following feedback from clients in the sporting arena, telling us that they needed better financial planning as their careers were so short and they weren’t getting appropriate advice from the mass market.
The partnership will focus on current professional sports men and women, as well as retired players who are pursuing other careers. The service will also be particularly useful to new professional players, given the importance of planning our finances as early as possible.
Guy Horchover, Head of ProSport, explained that Jelf’s investment, pensions and savings advice will align well with ProSport’s car, home and injury-related products for sports people. “Between 15,000–20,000 sportspeople will qualify for our proposition. Footballers are the major customer segment but we welcome sportspeople of all disciplines including rugby, cricket, golf, athletics, tennis, horse racing, darts, snooker and motor sport.”.
Chris Jelf, founder of Jelf Group, said that specialist insurance and financial services for sportspeople is a growth area, because “they are ignored by the broader insurance market as insurance becomes increasingly commoditized.”
“Communities with particular requirements are underserved, which in turn is leading to the growth of tailored propositions by specialist brokers, such as our partnership with ProSport, to service their needs.”
Horchover added: “Increasing segmentation will benefit specialists like ProSport, where our staff are either from a sports background or are passionate followers of sport. They talk the language of sportspeople and instinctively understand the needs of our customers, because they’ve been there themselves.”
